IKEA hack! How to transform a wall lamp into a Super Mario Bros star!

Get your boy’s bedroom in the Mario Bros theme with this simple DIY of a Super Mario Bros Star. It takes only a couple of minutes to make.

My son loves everything video game related. When he was little, I had a “stars and moon” theme going on in his bedroom. So, instead of getting rid of the IKEA  star wall lamps, I decided to transform them!

What you’ll need:

How to make the Super Mario Bros Star

Remove the star from the back (where the light bulb is). On paper journal, lay down the star. Spray as many coats as necessary to hide the blue (for me, it was 3 coats). Don’t forget to let the paint dry between each coat. You should do this ideally outside or in a well-vented area.

You don’t even need to paint the back of the star.

Using a small paintbrush, paint eyes with black and white acrylic paint, taking the time to let the paint dry between the black and the white.

And voilà! Simple and cheap! Can you ask for anything better?

As you can see, it makes really great nightlights. And since the bulbs are LED, they don’t get hot so no need to worry about fumes from the spray paint.

  1. This is perfect for a little boys room. Really thoughtful and well done.

  2. Such a cute idea. My boys had these lights when they were small (they are very big now!) and would have loved this.

  3. These are very cute and resourceful. Great job of up-cycling what you already have on hand. Thanks for sharing at #HomeMattersParty

  4. You're right! We should be thinking more about painting something before throwing out! Thanks for your comment!

  5. What a cool idea Natalie! I am always screaming about the power of paint and how almost anything looks better, improved when we paint it. And your pretty star is the perfect example. No need to throw something out that is no longer desired, just paint it. I'm sure your son must be thrilled.

  6. What a great idea! My daughter has the pink flower version and I've just realized I could paint it white so it blends in with the wall a bit better. Thanks for the inspiration!
