Learn how to make a vintage framed map. Full tutorial on how to distress it, make it look old and how to frame it for cheap.

[/wc_box]

It is already the third week of the $100 Room Challenge and things are not quite going as planned. My tools are all in my shed. And while it is heated, snow and cold temperatures (it went to -40 degrees Celsius with the wind) complicates my work.

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5

Although making a vintage map was not in my original plans, I had indeed the idea of installing a framed picture above the fireplace ( see week 1 )

I was looking for what I could hang there that would not be too expensive, but big enough. I remembered the DeLong’s wine posters my husband had bought a long time ago. Yes, we checked and he bought them in 2008! Both posters are 24 “x 36”, so not always easy to find a wall where to install them!

Seriously, my husband is a big fan of wine and these maps are really extraordinary. You should see the new posters in the form of a metro map.  It’s a great gift for a wine lover and it’s done so that even beginners can understand the oh-so-many wine regions. And no honey, we’re not buying another, sorry !!! 😉

Now, Mr. De Long, I apologize in advance! I could have used your beautiful map directly without any intervention, but it was stored in the tube for so long that when I took it out, it ripped!!

As I often say,  everything happens for a reason! So I thought to give it a vintage look!

How to do it

Place parchment paper on your work surface.

Add a few grains of instant coffee.

Place the map on top and add black coffee with the foam brush until the map is thoroughly wet.

Once it has softened, feel free to fold it and rip it some more!

You will see the instant coffee grains appear through the map. When you find that the grains look pretty, transfer the map on a clean surface to let it dry.

When it’s dry, use the Stazon ink to add colour where the map is ripped and folded.

How to make the vintage framed map

Cut the moulding to make a frame around the masonite like this:

Dyed and varnished the mouldings (the pink blanket is completely optional! Haha)

Screw masonite to the 1 “x 3”. These will be used to secure the frame. I could have used a plywood instead of masonite, but I wanted it to cost as little as possible !! You can also see Shanty 2 Chic‘s tutorial that inspired me and how they make a frame with plywood.

Also, drill a bigger hole for the head of the screw with a larger bit. Sometimes, I drilled too far … oops!  No worries, it won’t show with the map on top!

It’s after this mistake that my husband showed me his countersink drill bits kit. I could have made these holes in only one step without any mistake! Now I know! And so do you!!!

This way, the screws are flush with the masonite.

Here is what it looks like once the 1 “x 3” are screwed.

Then it is better to take the time to paint the outline of the masonite because the map shrinks slightly after drying.

How to install the map on the masonite

When the paint is dry, just glue the map with Mod Podge. I used an old credit card to spread the Mod Podge. This is really faster!

** Tip: place the map and start by gluing center. It’s easier that way.

When the map becomes humid with Mod Podge, place it on the masonite and rub it to bring out the creases.

Then install the mouldings by nailing in the 1 “x 3”.

And Voilà!

[ctt template=”4″ link=”R826g” via=”yes” ]Have you seen this DIY Vintage wine map?[/ctt]

I was originally supposed to install the map on the shelf of the fireplace, but it seems that this project will not be part of the $100 Room Challenge this time for all the reasons listed above.

So I installed eyelet screw and a cable in order to hang the frame.

If you noticed, in the beginning, I said my husband had bought two posters. It didn’t take much longer to make a second vintage framed map!

But the second one will not part of the $100 Room Challenge. I have surprised my husband and installed this one in his office at work. 🙂 This is the  Wine Grape Varietal Table. It’s a table to see at a glance the various selections from wine and how they relate to each other.

The map is beautiful, but I'm so jealous of your husband's wine/grape varietal table. That's exactly the kind of thing we would love around here. Thanks so much for sharing at the #happynowlinkup!
