It’s that time of the year when you need to get your courage to organize and identify the new school supplies! But I have an easy solution for you!
Whether we like it or not, it’s already this time of year: the time when we have to get the new school supplies for the new year.
I don’t know about you, but my daughter loves to shop for her supplies (I remember I was the same!) But my boy, not at all!
Do you already see yourself doing the endless task of identifying every pencil?
Well, I have a solution for you!

Identification
Simply use Washi Tape. There are now plenty of colors and design that your kids will surely love! Even better, you let the kids have fun with that! It’s easier for them to try to write initials on each pencil!
Even better than doing it yourself, let the kids have fun with that! It’s easier for them (and for you too) to add Washi Tape then to try to write initials on each pencil!
Tip: a piece of washi tape for the pen and another for the cap may avoid losing a piece!!
For the boy, find a print that will interest him like Pokemon or Angry Birds. You’ll have a kid greatly motivated to help!!
My daughter, too happy to be able to “decorate” her supplies, put Washi Tape even on her duo-tangs to highlight the subject that will be written on them!
And why not on other items, such as lunch boxes? Discreet, but pretty obvious if like me, you shop at Costco and that lots of kids have the same lunch boxes!
Organization
To avoid going crazy when your child (in my case it will be my boy, but don’t tell him !!! 😉 ) will arrive home and will be missing an item, make sure you buy some backup supplies. You’ll avoid paying full price and save a trip to the store (if you are like me, every minute counts!!)
The most practical supplies to have at your fingertips:
- Erasers
- Glue sticks
- Pencils
- Pens
- Highlighters
- And finally, a box of additional basic colors markers (kids have the tendency of using certain colors in particular or not closing the cap properly !!!)
And the best is to put them all in the same place, in a nice practical box!
It can even be used for homework!
You’ve probably notice that there’s still Washi Tape work to be done here! So I’ll go put the kids to work right away! 😉
What about you? Do your children identify their school supplies by themselves?

Perfect advice for back to school
What great ideas for back to school, and such a good way to make back to school shopping fun. Thank you so much for sharing, and for being a part of Hearth and Soul. Pinning and sharing around.
Thank you, April, very nice of you!
Washi tape is a really good idea to differentiate office supplies. Washi tape is also so fun I can see children enjoying organizing this themselves.
🙂 Thank you Leanna
This is an awesome idea. Unfortunately, our kids school requires that every kid use the same exact pencil pouch. Other than $$, I’m not sure why. But I do love the idea of washi tape on all the supplies, too. Thanks so much for sharing at the #happynowlinkup!
The same pencil pouch? That is weird! Thanks Leslie
I love using washi tape, and these ideas for using washi tape to ID school supplies is a great idea.

Thank you Nicole!
Mmmmm I’ve never thought of labeling school stationary and I want to kick myself. It would have made things so much easier. At least the kids would know who the pencils belong too and I would have saved a ton of money.
hihi, thanks, Michelle!
