Follow the makeover of my family room during January as part of another $100 Room Challenge. Only 1 month and $100 to makeover this room.
This challenge was created in 2015 by Erin of Lemons, Lavender and Laundry. She thought of renovating one room, during one month for only $100. Then, exactly one year ago, Erin opened the challenge to other bloggers. It will be the third time that I participate in this challenge and really love it. I previously updated the bathroom and my daughter’s bedroom.
From the first time I participated in the challenge, I decided to convert the $100 USD in Canadian currency since my purchases are made in Canada. I think it provides a better equivalence with the projects of American bloggers even though they thought I was very funny at first! 😛 My budget will then be 125 $ CAD 🙂
My family room
My family room is located in the basement. It’s a large room at the bottom of the stairs. It includes a home theater, a fireplace, an office and a foosball table . The office area will not be included in the challenge. I will instead focus on the home theater and fireplace section. A girl must know when to stop and set limits!!!
So here, in all humility, is the state of the family room. 🙁 You will quickly deduce that the first stage of the challenge will be to pick-up, discard and tidy up !!!
We had some misadventures with defective appliances in the next room so this place soon became a major storage, or more like a dump !!
And the view when coming down the stairs … oh boy!
Even the exterior of the house needs shovelling if I want to be able to see outside the windows by the end of February!
Family room makeover Goals
Since every post will be on Wednesday, this January will be a 5-week challenge! I’m in luck! Here’s what I want to achieve:
- Week 1: Introduce the room and the project (you are here);
- Week 2: Bring order in the room (no choice there!!!);
- Week 3: Installing a floating shelf above the fireplace; (** Update: there was a slight change of plan!!!)
- Week 4: Mount the TV to the wall and install shiplap behind the TV. No, it will not be a Lauan panel cut into strips as seen everywhere. I’ll tell you all about it in week 4! (**Update again!: This challenge didn’t go as plan AT ALL!)
- Week 5: Layout of the room and reveal time!
Well, have to go, I have lots of picking up to do !!!

I can’t wait to see the big reveal! Thanks so much for sharing your post with us on Whisk It Wednesday this week. Hope you have a great week and come back soon! Carrie
I think we’ve all been there with rooms that look like that; they slowly end up where we put everything to get it out of sight. I can’t wait to see what you do with this, I know it will turn out beautiful. Be sure and link up with Party in Your PJ’s every week so we can follow you! I’ve shared on social media.
It’s looking GREAT! Thanks for joining us last week at Reader Tip Tuesday! We hope to see you at this week’s party. xo
Love to see that my house isn’t the only one with rooms like that! Looking forward to seeing how you pull everything together for only $100 and in just a few weeks! Thanks so much for sharing at the #happynowlinkup!
Looks like a great room for a makeover! I am excited to see what you do!
I can’t wait to see how you makeover this room! That shiplap wall will look so good!! Can’t wait to see the reveal!!
My whole house looks like that right now to be honest! LOL, but I think you have some great things planned and can’t wait to see how they turn out. Love the tile on the fireplace too!
So exciting! Can’t wait to see what all you do!
Looks like you have your work cut out for you, but I know it will be a dream when it’s done. When you finish that, you can come to my house and declutter! Ha, well, we know that’s one of the hardest things…getting rid of.
haha! Thank you Florence!
That sounds like such a fun challenge! I was just telling my husband I wanted to focus on one room each month and refresh them; new curtains, rearrange furniture, etc. I love the $100 budget idea and can’t wait to see your room all finished!
Well thanks Joanne! You should definitely do it. It sure helps to have a deadline and a budget! I feel like I don’t get anything done without it!
I look forward to the final reveal of this space. I can relate to having a “dump” room, too. We’ve had our fair share of appliance mishaps and “redecorating” while things were repaired/replaced. We have junk drawers…why not a junk room? haha
haha! Thanks Audra
